About PARA The Official Voice of Alberta’s Resident Physicians

Watch How PARA is Always Here to Support You

DR. Michael Zeeman
2026 – 2027 PARA President

To all new and current residents, welcome to a new year! I am honoured to serve as your 2026-2027 PARA president. We are coming into this year excited and emboldened to advocate for you where it matters most.

Our mission is to support you along every step towards independent practice. We have laid out several key priorities to focus our efforts. We aim to better define resident physicians as a workforce in the healthcare setting. We will build out stronger systems for reporting agreement compliance issues, enhance support systems for international medical graduates as a diverse group with distinct needs, and review all current PARA programming to ensure that our time and resources are going towards high value areas.

We know that meaningful change takes time and we dedicate ourselves to that mission. The majority of this work will take place in the background while you focus on your training. At the same time, we will listen to you and meet you where you are; your voice and vision drive us forward. Your professional needs are our most central priority. We will stand beside you.

The Professional Association of Resident Physicians of Alberta (PARA) represents over 1,900 resident physicians training across the province. As your official advocate and bargaining agent, we protect your workplace rights, compensation, and overall well-being.

PARA is governed by a Board of Directors that provides strategic direction and oversees the association’s activities in the best interests of Alberta’s resident physicians. Supported by the Advisory Council and PARA staff, the Board works to ensure residents’ voices are heard and their interests are represented. Together, they guide the association’s priorities, support its members and advance its mandate through established governance policies and bylaws.

PARA offers resident physicians opportunities to get involved, share their perspectives, and help shape the future of residency training in Alberta. Members can explore leadership roles, serve as representatives on the Advisory Council, participate in committees and working groups, and contribute to initiatives that support the resident physician community.

To learn more about current opportunities, contact the PARA or connect with your Advisory Council representative. We encourage residents to get involved and make their voices heard!
