Equity, Diversity And Inclusivity Initiative Grant

Background

Equity, diversity and inclusivity is a key priority for PARA. PARA is committed to identifying and supporting ways to advocate for and support safer working environments for resident physicians through:

  • Enhancing resident physician personal skills in a safe and inclusive manner
  • Building supportive environments in PARA programming
  • Identifying and sharing community supports
  • Advocating for policy change and compliance

Funding, in the form of grants, is available through PARA to support resident physician-led initiatives that promote and support EDI within PARA’s membership.

Eligibility

  1. Applicant must be a PARA member in good standing within the Association

  2. Previous recipients of a PARA EDI Grant are eligible to apply

  3. No resident physician will be allowed to hold multiple PARA grants within the same academic year

  4. Only one approved application per resident physician will be allowed per year

  5. The duration of funding for each initiative should be limited to 12 months

  6. PARA Assembly Delegates may apply

  7. PARA Executive Board members may apply; however, they may not be the primary applicant

  8. Previously funded initiatives will not be eligible for reapplication

Application Deadline

Grant applications can be submitted at any time during the year.

Application Process

Successful applications will outline how the initiative will impact a broad cross-section of resident physicians and display an innovative strategy for addressing EDI objectives. Applicants can choose to apply for either project-based funding or one-time event-based funding. This grant is not intended to fund current existing initiatives.

EDI grants will be made available to PARA members via the Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity Committee. This Committee will be responsible for the announcement, evaluation and disbursement of the grants to resident physicians on a yearly basis.

The PARA staff liaison to the Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity Committee will confirm approval or denial of the application within ten (10) business days of receiving the application. As the Committee meets from October to May each academic year, applications will only be reviewed during this time.

Applicants should complete and submit the attached grant application form. Should the proposal be reviewed favorably, more information about the proposed initiative may be requested. This grant is not intended to fund currently existing initiatives.

Completed applications can be emailed to: Tara Madden, tara.madden@para-ab.ca

Awards

The Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity Committee will endeavor, where possible, to distribute equal numbers of grants to Calgary, Edmonton, northern Alberta, southern Alberta and central Alberta. The committee will not restrict the number of grants awarded should there be funds remaining after initial allocation and appropriate applications remain.

Financial Considerations

Grants may be awarded in values not exceeding $2,000 and will closely follow the applicant’s submitted budget.

Funding is available under two streams:

  • A maximum of $10,000 per academic year for project-based initiatives
  • A maximum of $5,000 per academic year for event-based initiatives

Applicants will be reimbursed by PARA for costs incurred after submission of receipts. The funds reimbursed will not be greater than the amount stipulated in the grant. Should there be extenuating circumstance for cost overruns, the Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity Committee will consider additional reimbursements on a case-by-case basis.

Post-award Reporting

At the conclusion of the initiative, or the academic year’s end (whichever is more appropriate, given the timeline and nature of the project) successful applicants will be required to submit an Initiative Review document.
